What fascinated me about this paper was how it showed the transformation of a hydroelectric power plant from manual operation to an intelligent, automated system. A hydroelectric power plant generates electricity by converting the energy of flowing or falling water into electrical energy through turbines and generators. The study focused on the Tis-Abay II Hydropower Plant, where the failure of its outdated SCADA system had resulted in several operations being performed manually. SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is a system used to monitor, control, and collect real-time data from industrial processes. The study introduced a new SCADA system using SIMATIC WinCC Runtime Advanced within the TIA Portal. SIMATIC WinCC is Siemens software that provides a visual interface for operators to monitor and control industrial processes, display alarms, record historical data, and observe operating trends in real time. I found it particularly interesting how this system could transform routine manual tasks into automated operations while giving operators better access to the plant’s operating conditions and performance.
